Jan Myrdal son of two Noble laureates Gunnar Myrdal and Alva Myrdal knew Indian government and ruling class and party from very close quarters. He was also aware of our fellow countrymen and their sweat and destituteness. It was his unfathomable love, which inspired him to crisscross over the country again and again and endure all sorts of adversities be in 1959 or in 2010. It was this love for the toiling masses that has made him one of the respectable friends of the Indian people. The book India Waits was a product of intellectual pursuit and field survey for twenty years.
The second edition of the book will be published with a new chapter which went missing in his first edition all over the world. It is our tribute to Jan Myrdal.
“ India Waits is a most disturbing book, written by the son of the Noble laureate Gunnar Myrdal and his wife Alva, who was Swedish Ambassador in Delhi, and illustrated by his wige Gun. A blasting indictment of our administration, our leaders, our police, our jails, corruption, poverty and our helplessness to do anything about them. They see ‘ darkness in every home, tears in every eye.’ They ask, ‘To whom does power belong? To whom happiness ? For whom is the land milked ? So that some starve while others reap bounty?’
Khuswant Singh, editor at Hindustan Times in late 80s.
