India's Myanmar Maneuvers

India's engagement in Myanmar, as compared to that of China's, is not yet very significant. But Delhi considers the India-Myanmar relations to be very important, particularly in the context of evolving Indo-Pacific strategic dynamics. Myanmar is also a key link in furthering India's 'Act East' Policy. Despite lagging behind China, India none the less continues to compete and consolidate its ties with Myanmar. As the world condemns the Myanmar military for its systematic violation of rights of the Rohingya and other minorities, New Delhi maintains a stoic silence in the hope that such capitulation would reap strategic benefits. The military has now declared a year-long emergency. The attention to New Delhi's potential embrace, or at least tolerance, of the Myanmar junta following the coup d'etat and the ouster of the democratically elected NLD government reveals an ugly consequence of geopolitical maneuvering and competition for influence in the region. The book deals with the subject of India-Myanmar relations, highlighting how India's tightrope walk is becoming increasingly difficult.
